Pitch to unlock housing funding

The Nelson Tasman Housing Trust recently joined forces with Habitat for Humanity Nelson to make a pitch to the Nelson City Council to allocate more of its Housing Reserve funding.

In our joint presentation to councillors, we asked for $1 million for each community housing provider, which would enable us to leverage more funding and build a total of 25 new affordable homes.

The council allocated $1.85 million to both providers last year as part of the first phase of allocations from its Housing Reserve fund. About $10 million in funding remains.

NTHT and Habitat urged the council to proceed with phase two of the funding allocation because there was a huge need for affordable housing in Nelson. Both organisations had planned developments they were ready to proceed with.
